7th Consecutive Tour de France Victory!
Congratulations Lance Armstrong!

The saga of Lance Armstrong and his recovery from cancer and subsequent multiple victories in the Tour de France is known worldwide. Now, you can use the story of Lance Armstrong to motivate and inspire your employees to face challenges, overcome obstacles and achieve new heights of success.

Ask Lance Armstrong’s competitors and teammates, and they would say he was. His grace in the saddle and powerful pedal strokes make his two feet on solid ground even seem a bit unnatural.

To get to two wheels, however, he first had to tread a little water. In his teens, Lance was a top swimmer and triathlete until the U.S. Cycling Federation saw the phenom from Plano, Texas, on a bicycle. His triathlon career soon ended, and at 17 he was training with the Junior National Cycling Team.

After fitting in high school graduation between a trip to the Junior World Championships in Moscow and signing with the Subaru-Montgomery pro/amateur racing team, Lance began meeting the racing world’s expectations. After winning the U.S. Amateur Championships, Motorola, the top U.S. cycling team, enlisted him into the world of international cycling.

The Texan quickly established himself in professional racing, pulling Motorola to a No. 5 ranking in 1993. Lance was not only winning races, but winning with an aggressive, fearless style that solidified his reputation as a confident, brash young racer who proved himself on the race course every day. The next three years saw Lance become a true force in international cycling as well as the top U.S. racer.

In 1996 Lance started the season strong, winning another Tour DuPont and the Fleche Wallonne. But in the year he was predicted to win his first Tour de France, Lance’s strength and competitive spirit would be tested in ways no race had ever tested him before. In early October he was diagnosed with an advanced form of testicular cancer. It had spread to his abdomen, lungs, and his brain.

The Comeback Given less than a 50 percent chance of survival, Lance was faced with the challenge of his life. He faced this challenge like all others he had faced—head on, attacking it like a mountain pass in the Tour de France. He thoroughly prepared himself and placed his faith in his team of doctors to lead him to victory. Miraculously, after a year of aggressive surgery and chemotherapy, Lance was declared cancer-free in 1997.

In 1998, Lance officially returned to professional cycling, this time wearing a United States Postal Service jersey. After an uncertain early season, he finished strong and proved he was back in form by winning a stage race and placing fourth in the World Championships. Lance proved to himself and to cancer survivors everywhere that you can get a second chance.

In 1999, he took full advantage of this second chance. For the first time in his career, he focused on the Tour de France. Merely starting this race was a victory, considering the circumstances. But Lance wanted more than a moral victory. On the first day, his first Tour de France stage since abandoning in 1996 with an unknown cancer growing in his body, Lance Armstrong won. That changed everything. Now he could actually see himself winning. With confidence and strength he attacked the Tour like a champion, like the strongest rider in the peloton. Lance Armstrong achieved the impossible. He won the Tour de France.

His victory in 1999 was a script no one would have believed, and he repeated the fairy tale with victories in 2000 and 2001. Lance also competed in the Sidney Olympics, where he earned a bronze medal in the individual time trial.

Beyond his achievements in cycling, Lance has transcended the role of “sports hero.” People of all walks of life recognize Lance as an inspiration regardless of their interest in cycling or any other sport. He has won almost every major award granted by sports and non-sports organizations. His wildly successful autobiography, It’s Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life, has spent nearly a year on the New York Times best-seller list.

Today Lance is motivated not only to win bike races, but to compete every day for the gift of life—his own as well as others. Through his involvement in the Lance Armstrong Foundation, he has become a powerful voice for cancer survivors everywhere. Since its inception in 1997, the LAF has granted more than $ 1,000,000 in research for cancer survivorship programs.

The Lance Armstrong story is not only of elite athletic performance, but also one of great human courage and perseverance. He is a survivor, a champion, and a hero, for this and all times.
